One of the first questions that come up in a home-buying process is what neighborhood to choose. Philadelphia is a city of neighborhoods and each one has its own unique character! You will never love a house, if you don't like your neighborhood. Thus, keep in mind few things when looking for a perfect fit!
1. Find a fit for your lifestyle!
What is your lifestyle like? Think what you're really looking for in the neighborhood. Keep in mind you will have to compromise something, it will never be just perfect. Then, make a list of the things that are main importance and the list of things you would love to have but can live without.
2. Do you have children or are you planning to have children any time soon?
If so, first thing is to research the school system. Most of the schools have open houses that you can visit and learn about programs. You can also make an private appointment to get a better perspective. If you have kids, you would also want to look for parks and community centers near by.
3. What's your current community lack?
Everybody is different, what makes one happy, can be a total misery for another. Do you value your privacy or would you like to be in the middle of all action? With all the development happening in the city, you can easily live walking distance to all the restaurants bars and coffee shops. Otherwise, you can choose more private neighborhoods.
4. What makes you happy?
Visualize yourself in the neighborhood. Check it out at different times of the day, talk to the neighbors, be curious and outgoing. In our everyday busy schedules, small things matter. Do you like to wake up to nice cup of coffee? Then, make sure to have a coffee shop down the street. If you always wanted to live on a waterfront - put it on top of your list.
Buying a home is a very personal decision, but it's also a huge investment. Want to change your life? Change where you live!
