Philadelphia is a city of myriad neighborhoods, each unique in what it has to offer. This is particularly true when an area experiences a renaissance after an extended period of dormancy.
Point Breeze is a case in point.
Years of stagnation have given way to a real estate boom. Homes that hadn’t been updated in decades are seeing new bathrooms, chef-worthy kitchens and the repointing of brickwork. Glass- and trash-filled empty lots - urban blight - transform, seemingly overnight, into higher end townhouses. Abandoned, broken-windowed factories and storefront buildings turn into apartment buildings mixed use developments.
But where to grocery shop? While there are two Acmes within driving distance, a neighborhood-based source for a vast array of fresh meat, fruits and vegetables is hard to come by. So it is welcome news that four Point Breeze residents joined the renaissance, Kickstarter style, to remedy that. They intend to have Rowhouse Grocery open by August, at 1713 McKean Street.
Here’s their December 2016 Kickstarter description of their intentions - followed by a link to an article that introduces you to the people and the place. Sounds irresistible.
“More than a market, our neighborhood storefront will be a center for our local and the larger community to come together as they buy groceries, pick up lunch, have a coffee break, or take a cooking class.”
Recently named Philly's Hottest neighborhood of 2017 by Philadelphia Curbed.com, Point Breeze’s potential is being realized. The neighborhoods close proximity to center city and the Broad Street Line, continued development, and some of the city’s favorite restaurants, make Point Breeze an area worth including in your home search.
