Philadelphia is a big destination for historical heritage. When someone thinks of Philly few things come to mind - Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Rocky steps, Art Museum...Yet, the main destination for locals and tourists is famous "LOVE Park". It has been under construction for the past year. Good news are - it will reopen this month with groundbreaking finishing.
Besides being a beautiful post on your Instagram pages, Love Park has a very interesting history. Named after John F Kennedy, the plaza was built in 1965 and had the first visitor center of the city. It was originally constructed over the parking garage by the famous City Planner Edmond Bacon. A majestic fountain and curved granite steps were added four years later. The iconic Love sculpture, designed by Robert Indiana, wasn't installed until 1976 and had to be removed 2 years later. Due to its popularity, it was purchased by the Chairman of the Philadelphia Art Commission, F. Eugene Dixon Jr, and returned to the plaza.
However, it wasn't the sculpture that made the park so famous. In the mid 80s the first skateboarding shops opened up there and shortly it became a mecca for local and national skaters, bringing a lot of attention nationwide.
What should we expect after the full-blown 16.5 million renovation? All around 21st century upgrades - additional green space, structural improvements, new fountain and more. I'm sure we won't be disappointed. Let's keep on waiting for the exciting renovation!
